Find large files

If Google Drive uses up most of your Google storage, there's no need to worry. You can free up storage quite easily. Remember that a file is not deleted as soon as it is deleted from Google Drive, rather it is stored in the trash. Deleted files will not see any changes in storage until they are deleted from the trash. However, it is better to be careful in these cases, because once deleted files from the trash cannot be recovered.

Visit the link https://drive.google.com/#quota from the browser, then you will see all the files in your drive with the largest files showing first. From here you can delete these files you don't need. After deleting files, don't forget to delete files from Bin/Trash as well.

Delete Gmail Spam

Many people receive a lot of spam in their mail every day. Most Gmail users forget to clean their Spam folder. But in just a few clicks, Gmail spam folder can be cleaned and Google storage can be freed.

To clean the Gmail spam folder, access the gmail.com link from any browser, or access the Gmail mobile app. Then enter the Spam option from the left side menu. If you don't see the option, first click on the More option, then you will get to see the feature. After clicking on Empty Spam Now / Delete all spam messages now option, all spam messages will be deleted.

Check for Large Gmail Attachments

Due to the large attachments that come in Gmail, Google Drive storage is often consumed. To check large attachments in Gmail, access Gmail from a computer browser. Then type size:10mb in the search box. Here you can enter any size instead of 10mb. After searching you will see Gmail attachments of specified size. Delete emails with large attachments that you don't need. Don't forget to empty trash after deleting.

Clean Google Photos

In our country, Google Photos is mostly used as a cloud media backup. Once backed up, we no longer check to see what kind of useful or useless files we have stored in Photos.

Like Drive or Gmail, there is no option to sort files from large to small in Google Photos, here files have to be deleted manually. Access the “i” option in the top menu to know how much storage a file is occupying.

To delete a photo or video stored in Google Photos from desktop:

  • Open Google Photos and login
  • Click on the gray checkmark icon in the top left corner of the photos or videos you want to delete
  • Then click on the trash icon in the top right corner
  • Then click on Move to trash
  • Click on the Trash icon on the left side of the screen
  • Then click on the Empty Trash option in the top right corner
  • Click on Empty trash option again

Also, photos and videos can be deleted from the Google Photos mobile app:

  • Access the Google Photos app and login
  • Select the photos or videos you want to delete
  • Then tap on the trash icon in the bottom right corner
  • Tap on Delete option
  • Tap on the Library option at the bottom right corner of the screen
  • Tap on the Trash option
  • Tap on the three dot menu in the top right corner
  • Then first tap on Empty Trash and then on Delete option

If you don't clean the trash using the Empty Trash option, the deleted photos or videos will not be deleted immediately, they will be automatically deleted after 60 days.

Smart Photo Backup

You can reduce the storage usage of Google Photos by reducing the size of photos and videos. Visit the https://photos.google.com/settings link and select the High Quality option, it will reduce the size of the image or video backed up to Google storage.

If you are using the Google Photos app on mobile, then enter the app, enter the Backup option from the settings and select the High Quality option from the Upload Size settings. Basically, this option will not backup your photos or videos in original size but as a fairly good quality but small size file which is enough for most users.

Smart File Backup

Converting a file to native Google format before uploading it to Google Drive can significantly reduce file size. For example: When a 10 MB PowerPoint presentation file is uploaded in Google Slides format, the file occupies roughly 0 MB of storage. This is because native file formats do not add to the size storage limit.

This feature applies to all other Google services such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, and Forms. This way you don't have to manually convert any files to save storage, Google has a feature for this.

Go to https://drive.google.com link and go to Settings on the right side of the screen. Check the box next to Convert uploaded files to Google Docs editor format. Various files uploaded to Google Drive will be uploaded in native format and saved in storage.

Download the file

If your Google Drive storage is full after deleting many files, you will have no choice but to download the files on Drive and save them to your computer (if any).

To download Google Drive files, Gmail messages and Google Photos:

  • Access the desired service from the computer
  • Then select the files you want to download
  • Click on the three stacked dots in the top right corner of the screen
  • Then click on Download option

Once the desired file is downloaded, delete the files from Google Storage and empty the Trash / Bin. In this way, the storage of Google Photos, Gmail or Google Drive can be emptied quite easily.
