Tricks to Recover Emails After Sending (Gmail)

Every day we send emails to different people as needed. Electronic mail is used for education, business, networking and many other purposes.

A little carelessness can lead to misdirected or malformed mail. Suppose, you want to approach your teacher/supervisor for copy review of your thesis paper. If he is away from your location, you can show him your work by email. In this case, you have to attach the thesis document to the mail and send it.

Now you write thesis progress and other information to your supervisor in the body of the email and request to see the attached file. But he forgot to attach the file and sent the mail!

Can you imagine the aftermath of such a mistake? No doubt it will be embarrassing for you. But since you have pressed the 'send' button, that mail is no longer under your control. Now you must be saying to yourself 'how great it would be if sent emails could be reversed/undoed/cancelled'!

Many may not know, this important feature is available in Gmail. In this case, you will get an opportunity to 'undo' the mail up to 30 seconds after sending it. This time alone is enough to avoid many undesirable situations. To use the feature, first login to Gmail on the computer. With Gmail's standard view open (by visiting www.gmail.com directly on your computer), click the gear/wheel icon in the upper right corner.

Now select 'See All Settings' from the options that appear.

Now in the page that will come you will see many features in a list. While on the General tab, scroll down a little and you will see the feature named 'Undo Send'.

By default, the ability to return (cancel or undo) the email is enabled up to 5 seconds after sending. But you can increase the cancellation period up to 30 seconds from this settings page.

Be it Gmail's desktop site or mobile app, after sending an email, you will see the Undo Send option on the screen. You will see the option to undo the mail on the screen as long as you set the time for undo send.

In the case of computers, after clicking the send button of the email, the option to withdraw or bring back the email - i.e. undo - will be seen at the bottom left side of the screen. See below screenshot to easily recognize.

In case of mobile too, after sending the email, you will get such an option at the bottom of the screen.
